Tafelberg is a special project that is built with the ambition to become a new monument over time, as it is built for generations to come. Studio Massimo, embraces the philosophy of ‘form follows nature’ in their pursuit of human and environmental well-being. Project Tafelberg embodies this ethos by integrating the landscape into architecture creating a new habitat for both people and non-humans. The building is a testament to the harmonious relationship between the two. The architect chooses biobased building materials to achieve this. Real poplar bark on the façade, while the structure comprises laminated wooden beams and solid walls crafted from FSC-certified wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. Users can look out over the landscape from every corner of the building. This creates inspiring and serene spaces made of natural materials, in which nature plays a prominent role in addition to people.

ENERGY & WATER
The building’s climate control uses thermal energy storage system through an innovative method that utilizes the natural cycle of ice formation. The rainwater is collected and used for watering greenery and flushing toilets. In short, every aspect has been carefully designed to blend Tafelberg with its surroundings like a natural work of art.

Activities
- 2021-2023
The first years we focused on changing the zoning plan, making costs estimates and explaining the step-by step approach to redevelop this site in a holistic manner.
- 2023-2024
These years were mainly used to draw up the definitive design, applying for permits, contracting the contractor and finding the suitable suppliers for the project. All while keeping an eye on budget and timeframe.
- 2024-2025
In May 2024 we started construction of the office. From then on the focus of our work lays mainly on construction supervision, finding technical solutions, manage time and budget and facilitate the financial administration. The building was completed in July 2025, the landscaping will be finished in October 2025.

Sustainability
Studio Massimo, embraces the philosophy of ‘form follows nature’ in their pursuit of human and environmental well-being.
This doen’t only translate into biobased materials, but also into sustainable solutions for every detail. The building is largely constructed from wood: Red Grandis columns and beams, CLT walls, tree bark cladding (all FSC-certified). The roof will be completely green (/ purple and yellow), so that the building blends in with the heathland surroundings.
It was not possible to dig deep into the ground (as the building is located on a groundwater extraction area), so an innovative ice buffer was chosen as a compact WKO system. This buffer was invented by Solareis. The building provides all its own energy through solar panels in the gutter on the south side of the building, so that they generate enough power while they still disappear within the image. Parking spaces are located below ground level, where electric cars can be charged. The view is breathtaking from every spot within the building. The sound of the birds whistling is unrivaled. Additional nesting and food facilities are being installed within the landscape, the facade and the roof. This way, the building really blends in with nature.
